FI-5 — what it actually means
Official definition
Transfer the offender to the In-Prison Therapeutic Community Program (IPTC) and release the offender to the aftercare component only after completing IPTC.
In plain English
Release was APPROVED, but IPTC must be completed first. After completion, the person is released to the program's aftercare component, not simply released without that next step.
What happens next
1. Approval is recorded. 2. Transfer to IPTC occurs; the wait varies. 3. The person completes IPTC; duration varies. 4. Release to the aftercare component follows completion; timing varies.
What you can do now
- Ask the person to share official IPTC placement updates.
- Plan for the required aftercare component after release.
- Keep family contact and release-address information current.
- Prepare practical reentry support around the aftercare plan.
Families often get this wrong
FI-5 does not mean direct, immediate release home; IPTC completion and release to aftercare are required.
